Scarlett Will Magic in the Smoke eBook Nikki Summers
Putting this on the shelf next to Laini Taylor's "Lips Touch: Three Times" and Holly Black's "Ironside: A modern faery tale". This is a dark story, the first half is one train wreck after another, you may need Prozac. Stick with, because the second half explains what's happened and pulls the little clues together. Also, Love the cover! Probably my all time favorite.
Looking forward to book 2!

Scarlett Will Magic in the Smoke eBook Nikki Summers Reviews
Amazing. This book took my breath away with how it portrayed first love and heartbreak. It's rather depressing in its harsh, realistic details of a runaway's life on the street but when love comes, it's wonderful. Absolutely a unique read with some paranormal thrown in. I sincerely hope there's a sequel.
This first book (I'm assuming there will be a sequel) resembles a coming of age book rather than a paranormal romance. I remember reading a high brow book written by a feminist author and ironically this book reminds me of it (sans the academically perfect prose).
It also reminded me of Anna Stothard's book The Pink Hotel (not a chick lit but a gritty novel). If the author (Nicole T. Smith) had someone edit her book to correct some of the grammatical errors (small stuff) and assisted her to elevate her writing to resemble refined prose - this book could cultivate an almost literary audience.
The book cover does not do it justice. It's more "fear and loathing in las vegas" than "Twilight". This novel conjures up the jaded darkness of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" combined with Blanche DuBois's destructiveness. The darkness in this novel isn't so much the evil demons but the debauchery, which is unsettling (and manifests itself in a seductive, glamorous party punk lifestyle). It's only towards the end of the novel (with the supernatural element) that it finally makes sense.
Scarlett is a trendy punk and a rebel growing up in the 80's punk rock scene. She has an alcoholic father who whinges that he lives with "demons" haunting him. Her mother isn't a strong character and doesn't stand up to her abusive father. Thus Scarlet is a product of her destructive home life. However, there's more to this and it all makes sense towards the end of the book.
Reading Scarlett's reckless abandon is horrifying, exhilarating, liberating, frightening and utterly shocking. One is rendered helpless. You want to protect her, slap her and live vicariously through her. It reminds me of those films with kids living in arty liberated squalor. However, all this really does come together in the end - it's a well thought out novel. Very different to the usual style.
Although there is romance - it's NOT the candy floss, rose petals, pink hearts and meaningful glances variety. I think there will be a sequel to this and that may narrate a sweet courting stuff.
This book was so mixed in genres and wonderfully mixed like color blocking it was absolutely amazing you are now one of my top favorite authors.
This story was amazing. I started at 11pm and finished the next morning. The story was real in way.I felt every emotion with Scarlett And Will. Will be watching for the other stories and passing the story along.
