Growing up, I cut my teeth in Prydain and Narnia. I grew up in Krynn, Middle-earth, and the world of The Lost Swords. I spent hours imagining what if…? What if the places were real? What if the powers and the weapons were possible? What if I could reach into those pages and be a part of that reality. Apparently, I was in good company.

Jim C. Hines grew up thinking the same thing, only he took and ran with it and, as an adult, brought it to life in his urban-fantasy novel Libriomancer, the first of the Magic Ex Libris series. Hines has taken the power of the written word and given it magic – real magic. The belief of readers, thousands upon thousands of readers reading the same text, gives a small group of magic users the ability to literally reach into the pages of a book and pull out whatever they can visualize from the narrative (swords, ray guns, potions). As long as it can fit through the size of the book, it can be manifested. A fascinating magic, Hines does a solid job of working through the logistics of his magic system, creating rules and playing his own version of ‘what if’, which is where the book really takes off.

His main character is a real bibliophile and enjoys nothing more than getting lost in the power of the magic he wields and trying to discover its limits and possible uses. It’s clear that Hines enjoys this too. Every time we came to a section where the limits of the magic system were tested, I could feel the writing and the story pickup. I could sense Hines own excitement at what he’d created.

The challenge was, similarly, I could feel it wane whenever he wasn’t exploring the magical elements. The quest, the romantic love interest, most of the minor characters, all of those needed the same spark of excitement that the magic held.

This was a solid telling and a world I’d like to return to, however I’d like to see Hines bring the same sense of wonder to the non-magical elements of his world as he did to the magical ones.

Libriomancer Magic Ex Libris Jim C Hines 9780756408176 Books Reviews

As a retired librarian, the premise of this story - bringing the magic of books to life - intrigued me. I love the idea that the shared love, experience, and belief of a story is what creates its magic. I enjoyed this tale and seeing which books would be used to defeat evil and save the world. The author did a good job of developing the two main characters (plus the fire spider). Other characters weren't developed quite as thoroughly. I did have to let go of reality completely to buy into so many different magical creatures and 500 year old people. There were times that the plot got bogged down in all these creatures and people - making it a little hard to follow. I also thought the "solution" to the love triangle at the end was hard to accept. For these reasons I would have given it 3.5 stars, but chose to round up because it did keep my interest. However, I'm not sure I'll continue the series. But for anyone who enjoys an entertaining sci-fi/fantasy read, I would suggest you give it a try!
How can you not love a book where the magic comes from books!!! I thrilled as I would stumble across a reference to a book I know and loved, there was just something so cool about reading about books and the stories within them. And very very different as far as the magic is concerned. There were the usual supernatural characters, yet turned on their sides just a bit. I think my favorite were the Meyeriites (sp?) and their origin story. Once I realized how the majority of the supernatural characters were created, it just got more fascinating for me. While I was looking for clues in the story for the plot while reading, I was also looking for clues as to which story each supernatural creature originated from. Very entertaining.

The world building was immense. The characters were mostly well drawn. I think I connected most with the hero and his love for his pet, more than anything. There was just a tiny bit of something missing to keep me hooked to the story.

For example, I'm a "read rate thru til I"m done" sort of gal. This story I read spread out over a month, picked it up at least 5 different times and never finished it. So the hook wasn't baited strong enough to keep me engaged and caring enough. I really think I kept coming back to it to read about the stories he used for the magic elements, more than any other. And I love at the end of the book the author included a bibliography of all the titles used in the book.

I will definitely pick up the next two books in this series. I have a strong feeling each one may be better than the last.
Imagine that you could pull out an object from a book. What would you pull out? The possibilities are almost infinite. In Libriomancer, Johannes Gutenberg worked out a way to pull out objects from books. In doing so, he became the first libriomancer - someone who uses magic to pull objects out of books. Hundreds of years later Gutenberg is still alive but has gone missing.

In Jim C. Hines' 'Libriomancer', we are pulled into a world where since the 15th century certain people, libriomancers, are born with the ability to pull objects from books. Our protagonist, Isaac Vainio, a librarian in UP Michigan, has been exiled for the past two years from this order, not allowed to work magic anymore for his past transgressions. But one day vampires show up at his library and he is pulled back into the world of magic. Set on quest, with his companion Dryad and fire spider, Isaac must discover the whereabouts of Gutenberg. And if he doesn't find Gutenberg then it's quite possible that all hell will break loose.

This faced-paced gem of a book is a treat for any lover of science-fiction and fantasy. Making references to cherished books left and right (care for Sonic Screwdriver, or an enchanted healing sword, or a cordial of healing liquid?), this is a world created by an author who clearly loves books and wants to share that love with the reader by allowing them entry into many beloved worlds. The book is written well, and gives just enough answers by the end to leave you satisfied but keep you wanting more.

P.S. Ponce de Leon nearly steals the show. I want more of him.
