This book was FLAT. I was gripped by the two opening chapters, but then the novel started to sink. I would have stopped reading this book if I hadn't had to read it for my book club. Some writers do a great job jumping back and forth between the past and present, but this did not work in Flat Water Tuesday. I know nothing about rowing and the author should have made more of an effort to explain this. I should have felt like I was in the boat when I read the book, but I didn't. Some athletic scenes went on too long (where was Irwin's editor?) and I got tired of reading about the male rowers spitting and heaving after a strenuous workout. Most of what happens in the book was predictable, especially what happens to Connor at the end. There were few surprises. I spent my childhood in Northwest Connecticut so I know the area and Irwin did a nice job, describing the hills and the Housatonic River.Tags : Flat Water Tuesday: A Novel [Ron Irwin] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I learned much about rowing, of which I had never been exposed.. My grand daughter is now a rower, which is why I was attracted the book. The writing was great plus kept me on edge of my seat several times as I watched the maturing of these kids. Some of the issues these " athletes" and teenager deal with, makes one wonder what makes coaches, parents and young adults push so hard. This is a good book, and informative lesson in " do we really want our kids in such a painful and difficult place? Food for thought anyway. Good read.
I have not read a book that better describes the rigors of rowing. The prep school plot is always appealing, but I have never felt the agony of the discipline and exercise that comes with crew.
You will definitely enjoy this book
The personal present day story is flat! Full of predictable romantic misery. The rowing tale of the early college years is more interesting but for that, I suggest, 'Boys InThe Boat.' Unforgettable.
Nicely constructed narrative and cleverly switches between two worlds as it slowly unwraps the life he lived and what has brought him to his current day reality.
The rowing was great to read about and thought more could have been made of it. As a former coxwain I know the rich narrative that can be used and felt more could have been done here.
Whether you are a rower or not this book will appeal.
Mr. Irwin has a natural storyteller's sense of what's important. He writes with clarity of observation that must have been hard earned, and has the courage to share it in all its truth. Several passages in the book were written so well, and rang so true, that I had to pause in appreciation.
The story is told from the wistful, grudgingly just clawing to maturity perspective of the hero. At its heart, the book ponders the meaning of leadership, sacrifice and focus on an athletic, professional and personal basis; what it means to follow, what it means to lead, the sacrifice implicit to trust, how easy it can be to lose/get lost and what it takes to get back on-track.
I look forward to Mr. Irwin's next book.
This is a really good book! Ron Irwin does a great job painting the picture of what its like for a working class post graduate headed to boarding school for one academic year for a "better future." It’s not long before you are brought right into the middle of social class and status versus the authentic main character from upstate New York. Ron's writing style keeps you engaged to each scene both set in the past and the present day. The training is written in such great detail that you think you are right there enduring the pain of the athletes. The racing scenes are an adrenaline rush that you will want to read them over a few times as you feel you are right there in the boat as it races to the finish line. There are enough twists to the plot to keep you turning the page all the way to conclusion. Excellent work!
A truly great read... perhaps because I rowed, I could associate with many of the feelings and emotions associated with the sport but I loved the novel. Thought it was well written and yet held a certain tragedy that kept me intrigued. If you would like to read something about sport that isn't college football or the like but rather on a completely different tangent, then I would recommend this read.
