The 'tell all' true story of one backpacker's insane adventure around Australia.

Julia is granted a working holiday visa and heads to Australia. Never one to do things quietly, she tours the country via a jumble of hostels, road trips and randomness, indulging in more than her fair share of debauchery along the way. She attempts and fails to learn to surf, attends her very first festival and explores the open minded village of Nimbin.

Intoxicated both literally and metaphorically by the backpacker lifestyle, Julia decides to extend her visa. However, there’s a catch. To be eligible she must complete 88 days of farm work. To console herself she purchases a small car (which turns out to be totally impractical for cross country drives) and decides to spread the work over the course of her trip. A dairy, cattle station and a hippy commune are all on the list and the hazardous results are hilariously entertaining, as the city girl takes on rural tasks.

Back on the road she continues to unearth the history, culture and people of Australia. Through the dust of the desert she fossicks for sapphires; in the subtropical north man eating crocodiles leap from murky waters, and off the East Coast giant fish chase her across the Reef.

Julia boldly takes uncalculated risks in the name of adventure and is not afraid to look stupid doing so. From bagging bananas and branding cattle, to animal attacks and outback disaster, it’s an authentic Aussie experience which will change her life forever.

"From the big cities of Sydney and Melbourne, to the Great Barrier Reef, Whitsundays and Fraser Island; this girl knows no limit to reckless adventure. Couch surfing, hitch-hiking, sailing and four wheel drive action, it's all there, alongside drunken mishaps and states of lust and inebriation to which we can all relate. Julia trails the Australian backpacker path in her own unique style."

A version is available for electronic reading devices and on the iPad.

I read many books about Australia, and I did approach this one with some prejudice, since "Kangaroos and Chaos" seemed a bit alternative and never become very popular. Which, in my view, is insane.

Ms Brooke does not tell you the story, she actually grabs your hand and takes you to a trip, which may become a trip of your lifetime. So fasten your seat belt because inside you will find everything a backpacker's life has to offer: fantastic adventures and hard farm job to be done, peaceful days with nature and evenings full of hedonism. Everything written from an unusual, very personal perspective of a European girl in her late 20's.

The book is not only an entertainment, it is a well-written guide through all the iconic attractions of Down Under: Blue Mountains, Kangaroo Island, Gold Coast V8 race, you name it, everything is inside. It is a unique guide, because if focuses on emotions rather then details. Redoing some of the adventures from the book seems like a must-done on any Aussie trip.

I read the book in two days, constantly looking on what will happen next. It does not matter if you sit in central Sydney, or in snow-coated Northern Hemisphere, you can almost feel the cold breeze of Southern Ocean while reading. Highly recommended.

Disgusting language and morals of the author made me quit this book very early into it.
As a big fan of both travelling and reading I loved this book!! It gives a very honest, real and down to Earth account of travelling around Australia. The good points and the bad. With a few 'OMG' and 'Laugh out loud' moments! A must read for those who either have travelled or more importantly, those who are thinking about travelling.
After just finishing this book, I can safely say that whether you have traveled Oz or are saving for this right of passage this is the book you want to read! The fact Julia decided to 'take on' Oz in a festiva makes for an interesting read in the first place, but her willingness to try anything and go with the flow is the way I personally like to travel. This book made me laugh out loud at the 'types' of backpackers described (types everyone who has ever stayed in a hostel will recognize!) Reading the last few pages made me realize that I wanted to hear more of 'what happened next' ...hopefully this is on Julia's agenda! I have decided to give this book 5/5 because its not everyday you see books by backpackers on the shelf, especially one as truthful as this. So I recommend this book for any budding backpackers out there or indeed for anyone who has just got home from traveler and wants to experience it again!
The author describes her journey around Australia on a backpacker's working visa. To have her visa extended, she needs to work in remote or rural areas - which she does.

I don't want to upset the author or stop her from writing more books, but if you're reading this review please, revise the book and get someone to help you with spelling and punctuation. You started off well getting chased by some cattle, but the endless partying and bonking was just boring - it's not a compelling narrative. Making mistakes like this 'Cooper Pedy' instead of COOBER PEDY, and 'Mindel Beach' instead of MINDIL BEACH are insulting and incorrect. The people in Coober Pedy who helped you after your car accident deserve to have their town's name spelled correctly.
